Wednesday’s Word of the Week: Geegaw

Wednesday’s Word of the Week: Geegaw

Definition: a 18th century word for toy. But also an insult as someone who is all show but no substance.

Where I Heard It: I started my Romanticism course at university this week and we are studying the Pamphlet War of the 1790’s where this is used as an insult in one of them and I like it. My dad said his mum used to use that word to describe a cheap plasticky toy, like the kind of thing you would get at a McDonald’s and that made me want to pick this as my word of the week.

Pronunciation: gee-gawe

As always, Stay safe guys!
