Meet the Book Blogger Tag

Hi guys!

Happy Monday – ready for a new week? I am feeling really productive because I have gotten through all my lectures and seminar questions for one of my classes this morning and I didn’t think I would get it all done!

I was tagged to do this by the amazing Stephen from Stephen Writes, so a massive thank you to him for thinking of little ol’ me! If you don’t read his blog then what rock have you been hiding under? You need to check him out. But enough faffing – you want to meet me so let’s get chatting!

  • Thank the blogger who tagged you
  • Mention the creator Lauren @ Lala’s Book Reviews
  • Tag as many (or as few) people as you’d like
  • Have fun and get to know one another!

Introduce yourself!

Hi, I’m May. I am 20 years old and I am from Scotland. I am currently in my third year of university, studying English Literature and Creative Writing. Despite having a flat in my university town I am currently back living at home because all of my classes are online thanks to COVID which means I get to spend time with my family which is amazing!
I obviously love reading (mainly YA and NA Romance), I love music and musicals – I am constantly singing. I also adore writing and hope to do NaNoWriMo for the 4th year in a row next month. I feel like I am missing massive parts of my life but that’s a general gist of me I guess.

Something almost everyone wants to know… do you have any pets?

No I don’t. Nor have I ever really. We had some fish for a while but I didn’t really look after them and I definitely forgot about their existence most of the time haha! We gave them away to a friend a while back because they have a pond and they were getting too big for our small tank. My mum is allergic to cats and dogs so that’s why we never had them growing up and despite me not being allergic I don’t really see myself with pets in the future.

What is your favourite thing to drink?

Pepsi Max in a can. It tastes the best. And yes, it does taste different to Pepsi Max in a bottle. And it most definitely tastes different to Coke Zero!! Don’t test me on this Pepsi Max is the best end of story haha!

What is your favourite season?

I am the stereotypical autumn loving blogger over here. It’s the best season in Scotland. You really get the best of all seasons – not too cold, not too hot. Plus I get to wear fluffy jumpers. It’s just the best. Although I do love Christmas so winter is a close runner up.

Do you have any special talents?

I don’t know if it’s a special talent but I’d like to think I can draw/paint pretty well. I did it at both National 5 and Higher in school (It’s like GCSE and A Level in England) and got A’s both times. I also really enjoy it even if it is very stressful because I am definitely a perfectionist. The only photo I have of my stuff is this pointillism piece of a nectarine and some red currants. I don’t know how well you can tell in the photo but everything is drawn just with dots, even the initial lines of everything were made with dots. It’s now framed and on my wall so sorry for the reflection. It’s one of my favourite ones as it took forever to do every little dot so I am proud of the amount of work that went into it.

When and why did you start your blog?

I started my blog in the summer of 2017. I was bored and on holiday and thought why not put my bookish rambles out into the world because I’m opinionated and I love sharing my opinions. Plus, I love rambling and ranting and I think writing down my thoughts is a good outlet for that.

What is something that you wish you knew about blogging when you first started?

I did a whole post on this kind of thing because there is so much I wish I knew when I first started out (Tips for New Bloggers) and I am definitely still learning. But I would probably say I wish I knew just to be myself. As cliché as that is, it is so true. If you go back and read my early posts (please don’t haha) all of the writing in them seem so forced. Even though all my thoughts are my own it’s like someone else has written them. Now I am so much more myself and just write literally whatever words come into my head. I used to stress so much about it coming across right but now I just stick with stream of consciousness because it’s just so much more me!

What has been the hardest part about blogging?

The hardest part for me is not beating myself up about it. Stephen talked about Imposter syndrome and it’s not exactly like that for me but also to an extent. I am always trying to outdo myself – up my views every month, get more likes than the last post, more comments. I am so bad for focusing on the stats of everything that I sometimes forget I love blogging because of blogging and not because of stats. Like yes – it’s so rewarding to put in loads of effort into a post and to see you guys love it but I need to work on the fact that every post isn’t going to be the best one yet and that doesn’t make it bad.

What has been the most rewarding part of blogging?

Blogging is amazing for so many reasons I don’t know where to start. I mean the friends I have made and the ones I’m sure I’m going to keep making are amazing. The community on here is so lovely and just always raise my spirits when I’m feeling meh. I love being able to help spread the word about indie authors that people may not have heard of! The idea that I could talk about a book and that means that someone could pick it up and find their new fave is amazing to me. I just love spreading positivity on here. I guess it all comes down to the community really and how loving and accepting everyone is; even when we don’t all agree.

Do you write your posts ahead of time or write them the day of posting?

I like to write my posts ahead of time but recently because of Uni starting back up I have been doing it the day the post is due but I always write it before and then schedule it for 5pm. So I suppose a bit of both.

Who are your top 5 favourite authors?

This is hard and I could barely narrow it down!

  • Kirsty Moseley
  • Jenn Bennett
  • Christine Zolendz
  • Joss Stirling
  • Sarah Rees Brennan

What genre do you read the most?

I read a lot of different genres but it almost always has a romance in it and is mainly YA and NA although I have recently been dabbling in Chick-lit more so that’s obviously Adult. But yeah, if it’s got a romance then sign me up!

What genre surprised you by how much you love it?

Urban Fantasy surprised me. I really dislike fantasy. I do not have time for all the world building and backstory melarky! I just want to know the plot, the chracaters, the romance and the drama. So I was super surprised by how much I love Urban Fantasy because it’s all the amazing parts of fantasy without the long world-building start! Amazing.

Which popular book didn’t live up to the hype for you?

The Hunger Games. It’s just not my jam – again for the world building thing probably. It’s just so drawn out. I want more action haha.

Who are some popular authors you haven’t read?

How long do you have haha! I have a bad habit of sticking with authors I already know and love and then on top of that I definitely read more indie or lesser known authors than I do main-stream writers but some of the most popular that I own but have never read anything from are Sarah J Mass, Maggie Stiefvater, Sophie Kinsella, Victoria Aveyard, Leigh Bardugo, James Dashner; literally this list could go on forever.

What upcoming release are you excited to read?

Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett is meant to be coming out in November. The release date keeps getting pushed back and I am dying to read it so hopefully it comes out soon!

Do you listen to music while reading?

It depends. I can’t listen to music when I read but I can listen to no-talking ASMR – and I often do for books on my university course which are hard to process but not really for books that I choose to read myself.

Where else can we find you online?

  1. Wow, I am seriously impressed by your art skills! That piece looks amazing! 😊
Autumn in Scotland sounds so beautiful, too – here, it’s mostly rainy and cold, so I tend to prefer Summer and Winter 😅
