How are you? I’ve been pretty busy hence the no posts. Also I’ve been struggling with writers block but I think it’s cleared! Sorry if this is a bit stiff before I get back into into the flow of things. But anyway, today’s review is of The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West (queen of cute teen romance) which I know is not a new book but it’s been on my TBR for ages now and I finally got around to reading in June so here is my thoughts.
Title: The Fill-In Boyfriend
Author: Kasie West
Genres: Young Adult, Romance, Contemporary
Publication Date: 5th May 2015
When I Read It: 6th June 2019
When Gia Montgomery’s boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she’d been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend—two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies.
After that, she can win back the real Bradley.The problem is that days after prom, it’s not the real Bradley she’s thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn’t even know. But tracking him down doesn’t mean they’re done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favour and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend’s graduation party—three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship.
My Goodreads Review:
I really liked this, the premise was great and the banter was adorable.
I loved that the main character was flawed and by the end of the book she is still somewhat flawed, it makes her real. The romance was so sweet and slow-building. Bec was hands down my favourite character. I really recommend this as a quick read if your in the mood for something sweet.
Characters: As I briefly mentioned, I really liked Gia as a character. At the start I didn’t like her but that was the point. She is Queen Bee, a mean girl who looks down on everybody unless they have something to raise her status or give her something. So when Bradley dumps her I was so glad because she literally was with him for his looks. Then she meets Fill-In Bradley and she is such a bitch and you literally can’t hate her more. Then as the book progresses things happen (Duh) and she tries to become a better person but at the loss of a lot of things she once thought was important. At the beginning of the book she loved her life, she thought she had everything figured out and without spoiling anything by the end she realised that she hadn’t but she wasn’t letting that get her down, it seemed to inspire her instead. I loved this and I felt like I connected to her as a character far more for this reason. You can never judge what someone’s life is like no matter how perfect it seems, and even in some cases those people themselves can’t tell, it was just so well done. I also loved Bec. She was so funny and relatable. Hands down my favourite character. I obviously loved Fill-In Bradley, he was funny and sweet and confused and just brilliant to read.
Characters = 8/10
Humour: I remember laughing at parts but no lines that were so iconic I can remember them. It’s also nearly been two months…so forgive me for the vagueness.
Humour = 7/10
Atmosphere: It’s obviously not a fantasy world that took large amounts of planning but her interpretation of teen life at school was very accurate. The juxtaposition between the different home lives was also very interesting and realistic.
Atmosphere = 6/10
Writing Style: I really like Kasie West’s writing as I’ve read quite a lot of her teen romance novels at this point. She’s great at depicting teens accurately, which you know is a big thing for me when it comes to my enjoyment of a book. It’s not flowery, far more straight forward but still enjoyable. Obviously I think the way she creates her characters is great, they may be stereotypical however it works to the advantage of the novel and proves the points the plot is attempting to bring to light.
Writing Style = 8/10
Plot: It was frustrating at times but an enjoyable frustrating where you know whats going to happen but the character doesn’t. Predictability isn’t an issue for me, because I expect it with YA romance fiction. Whilst it was predictable, it was an interesting idea for a story where you have to pretend your boyfriend is someone else.
Plot = 6/10
Intrigue: Like I just said, it was very very predictable and cliche but I don’t mind that personally. The blurb made it out that Bradley’s return was a far bigger plot point than it actually was so I was waiting for it but by that point Gia had already started to make changes to her life so it wasn’t the catalyst I expected so in that respect it kept me intrigued.
Intrigue = 7/10
Logic: Again like many of these teen romances, I can’t judge the realisticness of the American school experience but based on other media I would say it was accurate. I could relate it to my school experience so if anything its accurate to the Scottish education system.
Logic = 7/10
Enjoyment: If you couldn’t tell I liked this. I mean it isn’t a new favourite but it wasn’t horrific like some of the Goodreads reviews make it out to be. It was cute and it satiated my need for a good romance. The characters were written stunningly and they are really what sold the book for me.
Enjoyment = 6/10
Relationships: I obviously ship Gia and Fill-In Bradley. They were so cute and really a good opposites attract story. They brought out the best in each other.
Another relationship I loved was between Gia and her brother. It was so complex and sad and gripping. I loved the statement Kasie West was making with this and I think you should read the book if not for romance but simply for this arc and this statement about modern life.
Relationships = 7/10
Overall Score = 62/90 or 6.8/10
Star Rating = ⭐⭐⭐
