The Lynburn Legacy Series Review

Spoiler-Free Review of The Lynburn Legacy Series by Sarah Rees Brennan.png

I was in the mood to make a post but I didn’t know what I could do so I decided to rake through my book shelf for reviewing inspiration. I realised I had promised you guys a review on this series ages ago and I hadn’t done one yet so here it is. The Lynburn Legacy books by Sarah Rees Brennan is in my top five favourite book series of all time; I hope this convinces you as to why. (Also for reference, I am only talking about the three main books in the series and not the novellas (Which I really need/want to read))

Book 1 (Unspoken): Kami Glass loves someone she’s never met… a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born. She wasn’t silent about her imaginary friend during her unspokenchildhood, and is thus a bit of an outsider in her sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, Kami hasn’t suffered too much from not fitting in. She has a best friend, runs the school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.
But all that changes when the Lynburns return.
Untold.PNGThe Lynburn family has owned the spectacular and sinister manor that overlooks Sorry-in-the-Vale for centuries. The mysterious twin sisters who abandoned their ancestral home a generation ago are back, along with their teenage sons, Jared and Ash, one of whom is eerily familiar to Kami. Kami is not one to shy away from the unknown—in fact, she’s determined to find answers for all the questions Sorry-in-the-Vale is suddenly posing. Who is responsible for the bloody deeds in the depths of the woods? What is her own mother hiding? And now that her Unmadeimaginary friend has become a real boy, does she still love him? Does she hate him? Can she trust him?

I only put in the summary of Unspoken as I wanted this to be a spoiler free review! But here is the links to the other books Goodreads pages if you want them.
Book 2 (Untold)
Book 3 (Unmade)

When I first picked up Unspoken I didn’t think it was going to to be an urban fantasy (I don’t know why I didn’t because she can literally talk to someone in her head) but I thought I would mention it in case you did a me.
This plot had me hooked by the first couple chapters and my passion for the series only deepened as I progressed over each book. It was quite odd for me as why I get this addicted to a series I tend to read it in a couple of days and then wallow in sadness for eight because it was over so quickly. But for some reason this time I spread it out over several months. And it’s not because I didn’t enjoy them because that is the biggest understatement of the century. I read Unspoken in May, Untold in June and Unmade in August; each book took me a day or so to read. That’s how incredible this series is, I could go months without reading anything from it and jump straight into the next one remembering everything. Rant over (for now) summation: I LOVE THEM!!

Writing Style: I think this is when I really fell hook-line-and-sinker for these books. I am going to put some quotes down below because I can’t describe to you to extent in which Sarah’s writing style made this book so much more than a simple Urban Fantasy Romance. She managed to convey a simple human girls life perfectly while not loosing the mysticism of the plot. And don’t even get me started on the humour. I spent half this series in fits of giggles. The crux of the insanely incredible humour is that your in the middle of an unbelievably tense scene and then BAM! And it’s definitely tasteful, jokes arent made during death scenes and stuff. Just the timing is so perfect.
*CLAPS IN APPRECIATION* (Apologies in advance for the obscene number of quotes; I just couldn’t pick my faves)

Top 5 Unspoken Quotes (in no order):

  • “Technically speaking, you drive like a rabid chicken who has hijacked a tractor.”
  • One of the lambs fixed its attention on Jared. “Baa,” it flirted. “Boo,” said Jared. “Oh my God, Jared. Don’t tough-talk the lambs.” “It was giving me a funny look,” Jared claimed
  • then picked up a chocolate chip cookie from the floor. “Don’t eat that,” Mum said. Kami bit in. “Mmm, floor cookie.”
  • “Someone’s still after you. I’m not leaving you to be pushed into another well.” “How many wells are you expecting to find in a guesthouse?” Kami inquired. “Well, I’m not leaving you to be smashed on the head with a candlestick in the billiard room either”
  • “What is that?” Kami patted the object in an investigatory fashion. “I think it’s an exercise bike. My other theory, that it’s a giant whisk, seems unlikely.”

Top 5 Untold Quotes (again no order):

  • “You’re going to Hallow’s Field on your motorcycle?” “Want a lift?” “No,” said Kami. “I mean, you’re going into a situation where something really bad might be happening, and you’ve decided to make sure they can hear you coming? Better hope being a tavern wench works out, because you, sir, will never be a ninja.”
  • “Who was it?” Jared asked. “I’ll kill them.” “You are not inspiring me with a desire to give you a name, Captain Murderface of the good ship Unbalanced,”
  • She was god-awfully hideous. I swear she looked like a bad-tempered mutant tomato, and she was making a sound like a cat being fed into a printer.
  • That Kami Glass, people must say as she went by. About as sexy as a teapot.
  • You’re like a honey badger.” “I’m like a what?” Jared started to laugh. “No, I’m not. That’s ridiculous.” “Honey badgers are badass,” Kami argued. “The honey badger is the most hardcore of all the animals. They break into beehives and they get stung all over. Not because they have to. Just because they think bees are super tasty. Also they have been known to bite the heads off puff adders, collapse from the venom, and wake up from their comas going ‘Hey there, delicious snake.’ That’s how honey badgers roll.” “ ‘Honey badger’ is not a badass name,” Jared pointed out. “ ‘Death ray badger’ is a badass name.

Top Unmade Quotes (There were to many to pick just 5):

  • Lucky for you, I have another scheme. First I need a hundred ducks, but after that it will all be pretty simple. What do you need the ducks for? I’m going to put a whole bunch of them in a giant catapult and launch them over Aurimere, Kami said. This will create a distraction. My message will be: Look at all the ducks I give.
  • “I promise you, Holly, ‘Subtle’ would be my middle name, except I’m too subtle to have a middle name that’s such a giveaway. You don’t have to worry about a thing.”
  • “Hi there, dream canoe,”
  • “It’s possible I can make up for lost time. I hear girls like bad boys. I hope that’s true,” Jared said. “Because, baby, I’m bad at practically everything.”
  • “Hey, Angela,” she said. “Want to come with me to the graveyard?” “I absolutely do not,” Angela told her. “But I’ll see you in ten minutes.”
  • “I realize you are attempting to be humorous,” said Lillian, after a pause during which she stared some more. “I don’t understand it.” “Hey, you’re not the only family with a legacy. ‘Glass’ rhymes with ‘sass.’ Have you met my dad?”
  • “No, I was about to strip off all my clothes, stand on the edge of the roof, and shout, ‘I’m a golden god,’ ” Jared said. “That’s the cool thing to do at parties; I saw it in a movie. Except I’m afraid that in this town, considering I’m a Lynburn and the worst family trait we have besides the constant murdering is our crushing arrogance, people would take it seriously.” He paused. “Just kidding, I was brooding. Brooding’s my favorite.”

Characters/Relationships: I have tried to write this section about five times and I just can’t do it. I can’t summon the words to describe how much I adore all the characters each for their own quirks. So I am going to just use my shorthand type notes and hope you get the jist of it.
Kami – Sassy, motivational, adorable, smart and my sense of humour.
Jared – Broody (In a good way), loyal, funny, self-deprecating.
Ash – Kind, Honest, guilty, outer confidence, inner shyness.
Angela – sarcastic, grumpy, loyal, her sleepiness is me.
Rusty – Confident, Brave beyond words, my favourite character, inspirational
Holly – adorable, smiley, reminds me of Anna.
Ten and Tomo – Sympathy worthy, cute in a brotherly way
Kami’s dad – Literally my Dad for humour! SO SASSY!!
Kami’s mum – unsure how I felt, liked her but didn’t
*Villian* – The kind you love to hate! completely perfect murderous, power hungry overlord type.

All the relationships (romantic or otherwise) were like roller coasters. You were constantly on your toes. As this is spoiler free I will not say who I shipped (romantically) the most but lets just say I was happy (Over the moon) with the series outcome.
For me the friendships in this were almost (key word ALMOST) more important than the romance. I loved how loyal everyone was and the clear bonds between each character.

Dislikes: I don’t have any. I was sad at certain points but looking back I understand why Sarah did what she did and therefore respect the decision; despite hating it at the time.

Sarah Rees Brennan’s Lynburn Legacy Series is unequivocally the best YA Urban Fantasy trilogy I’ve ever read. Just read it! That’s all I have left to say.
If you have read it or plan on doing so please comment below so I can fangirl with you. I am off to go read it again because by golly I love this.

5/5 STARS on every single one!!!
